Welcome to Cherokee County, a special place in the southwestern corner of North Carolina.
The Great Smoky Mountains are believed to be among the oldest on earth.
The nearby town of Murphy began as a Cherokee Indian trading post called Huntersville.
The Spanish explorers Hernando De Soto and Juan Pardo visited the area in the sixteenth century,
as evidence of gold mining by the Spanish has been found along the rivers in the area.
Where the community of Murphy now exists was where Fort Butler was built in the early 1830s
during the 'Great Removal', when a multitude of Cherokee Indians were forced to the leave the
area and commanded to march along what is known as the 'Trail of Tears' westward to Oklahoma.
Here, at Morgan Creek mountain retreat, you can hike the trails that the Indians used for trading
and hunting. You can explore the out-croppings of large boulders and waterfalls
where Indians hid during the removal.
You can also walk on the old 'wagon road' that was built by the white settlers that farmed these
mountains, hillsides and valleys. Explore 50 wooded acres where you can reconnect with nature
and observe our local wildlife.
We are bordered by the Nantahala National forest, which in Cherokee
means 'land of the noon-day sun' .
